Womens Costume Trends For Halloween 2011
Halloween is a fun time for adults too, so don’t miss out on dressing up in a Halloween costume this year. There are many trends, media and celebrities that have had a major influence on women’s costumes in 2011, here are some of the stand-out costume categories that are sure turn heads:
Eighties Trends: Get your bop on with an 80s costume, there are so many awesome choices. Some of the decades biggest female pop stars such as Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Olivia Newton John make fun choices in Eighties costumes, costume accessories such as inflatable guitars and faux microphones and headsets made the lip-syncing so much more. Like, totally awesome, you could also dress up as a Valley Girl, Punk Rocker or Neon Rave Girl. If you love the 80s cartoon characters, there are plenty of ladies costumes for Strawberry Shortcake, Hello Kitty and a Smurfette – all popular icons of the era.
Media Trends: Movies, books, television and video games are all influencing factors in today’s Halloween costumes. Vampires and zombies continue to be a top pick for Halloween 2011, really it seems that the trend that made a huge comeback with the ‘Twilight’ movies will never die! Little Red Riding Hood costumes also made an appearance this year at the movies, Halloween revelers can choose from a traditional version and a sexy costume version. Characters from the cast of ‘Glee’ make a lighter option for ladies Halloween costumes as do the retro-look from shows like ‘Mad Men’ and the upcoming ‘Pan Am.’
Celebrity Trends: It always gets a good laugh to dress up in a celebrity costume to impersonate one of the year’s most notorious people. For womens costumes, female politicians such as Sarah Palin or Hillary Clinton are sure to spark lively conversation. Red carpet celebrities to impersonate might be Kim Kardashian, Kate Middleton, or one of the controversial ‘Housewives.’
Perry Sparkles as Smurfette
In late July, Katy Perry hit the red carpet in silly style for her movie première for The Smurfs. Wearing a sexy dress, the pop star sparkled in sequins showing love for the Smurfette that she voiced in the CGI / live-action film. You could say the figure-revealing dress was figuratively revealing – despite all the curves, Katy Perry is still just a kid at heat!
Not only was her Smurfette character bedazzeled on the front of her dress, but she also sported blue Louboutins pumps, smurf-blue eye shadow and a glittery smurf manicure while stopping to strike a pose for photographers and fans. The only thing missing was her blue wig, oh where was this blue cascading wig that she rocked for her music video, “California Gurls?”
A reboot of the 1980s Smurf cartoon and related licensed products craze, The Smurfs may just catch on for a second life. If so, Smurf costumes are sure to be popular this Halloween with both adults and children. To date, all we’ve seen are the traditional Smurf costumes of years past, the diminutive, blue-faced, white overall (or red pant) wearing creatures who lead a utopia life in the woodlands. However, we expect that updated versions of Smurf costumes will probably hit the market before the Halloween costume season, and may be influence by today’s pop culture with a sexier edge.
Essential to the Smurf costume is the blue face paint, and no this isn’t your ethereal, other-worldly blue hue of the Pandorians from Avatar. We are talking bright royal blue costume makeup that will need to cover your face, neck and hands. If you’d rather not get your hands smeared up with blue, you can wear (or dye at home) a pair of matching blue gloves or break with Smurf costume protocol and just wear a pair of those white, over-sized cartoon gloves (like Mickey Mouse gloves).
Shoes, Booze and Lots of Costumes – Sex in the City 2
The Sex in the City girls are at it again -- shoes, booze and, in this sequel movie, a romp through the Middle East. The years are flying by, and each of the utterly fab girls are wrestling with the inherent issues of a new stage in life; Carrie is getting used to married bliss with Big, Miranda is trying to balance work and motherhood, Charlotte is crazed over a non-existent affair hubby might be having with the nanny and Samantha is trying to keep menopause at bay.
Because New York City apparently wasn’t flashy enough, the girls head off on a luxury vacation in Abu Dhabi hosted by none other than the Sheik himself. While the local women are covered up head to toe in black robes and veils, the Sex in the City ladies try their best to keep it modest in their vintage Halstons, Manalo Blahniks and Hermes Birkins. The costume designer for the series, Patricia Fields, created more than 300 looks for the summer blockbuster – that comes down to 2 costume changes per each minute in this 148 minute movie!
The movie starts out with a flashback of the girls first meeting in the 1980s and these were some of the most outrageous costumes in my opinion. If you come from that era, can you even believe we wore that stuff?! Carrie was looking like an early pop Madonna in a petticoat, lavender corset, sleeveless flannel shirt and an overload of bangles, pearls and bows. Carrie also had a 80s costume where she gets right out of the cab in a womens costume reminiscent of the movie Flash Dance.
The 80s costume flashback for Charlotte featured a Lilly Pulitzer look skirt in preppy pinks and greens along with a cardigan thrown around the shoulders, and Tretorn sneakers with pink pom-pom socks (remember those?). Miranda, always the corporate gal, was shown as a total 80s go-getting attorney, rushing down the street in running shoes in her shoulder-padded matchy-matchy suit, starched white blouse and awful wedge hairdo. The Samantha Sex in the City costume featured her flashback before she was a public relations pro. As a wild bartender, Samantha is shown wearing peek-a-boo snake print pants, and a leopard tank under a studded denim vest. Red heeled booties, an outrageous bleach blonde wig and a Sony Walkman finished up her edgy Eighties look.
Some of the best Halloween costume ideas this year for fashion-conscious women are going to be based on the Sex in the City 2 movie. From the retro looks to the middle-eastern inspired flowing gowns worn while the girls were on vacation, each of these costume ideas is going to be a lot more fun with a Cosmo in hand. Go to the movies, check it out and then start planning your Sex in the City 2 today!
Get Phystical in 80s Costumes
What is the deal about the New Year and getting in shape, it seems that “losing weight” or “working out” are at the top of almost everyone’s resolution list. This is evidenced by the popularity of fun runs at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, stores sweeping the shelves of holiday goodies and replacing stock with rice cakes and diet tonics, and such a mob scene at the gyms around town that it’s a workout just rushing to get a treadmill before the next person does.
I was thinking that you could really make a great statement at your next outing to exercise by showing up dressed in 1980s workout wear. Just think about it; a 80s costume made up of workout wear a la Olivia Newton John – aerobic exercise class rules! You can get Physical in a pair of neon pink tights, a retro spandex leotard and a sassy little headband wrapped around a big head of permed hair. Oh, and don’t forget the legwarmers.
Now, it’s not like Olivia had the market on 1980s exercise style, there were several other “movers and shakers” who left their mark on this memorable fashion statement. Who could forget Jane Fonda’s ubiquitous workout tapes that you could pop into your VCR or Beta and start working up a sweat? While she sported a variety of exercise looks, Jane’s signature style seemed to be a horizontal striped two-color striped leotard (with the new “high cut” legs” worn with a matching belt, spandex tights and leg warmers.
What a Feeling it would be to dress up in an 80s costume based on the hit dance movie Flashdance. Actress Jennifer Beals gave new meaning to the phrase “ripping it up” as she spun around on the dance floor in her tattered and torn sweatshirts. To get the Flashdance costume look, just take an old cheap sweatshirt and cut off the arms, waistband and head opening to create a big scooped neck that you let fall off your shoulder. Pair with a permed brunette wig, footless tights and a pair of red heels and you’ll be ready to show your moves
