Playboy Bunny Costumes are Back!
Well, it’s about time the Playboy Bunny costume made a decent comeback. Always the traditional go-to choice in sexy costumes since they were first revealed in Hugh Heffner’s infamous Playboy Clubs in the 1950s, the Bunny costume has been eclipsed in the last few decades by the dozens and dozens of in-your-face sexy, nearly lewd, Halloween costumes.
But, now with the premiere season of ‘Playboy Club,’ a new 60s era drama on NBC filled with booze and babes. Costume designer for the show, Isis Mussenden, says the replicated costumes were kept as famous bunny outfits were kept as true to the originals as possible. For example, the ears are detachable headpieces that can be pinned into big, bouffant hairdos of the Sixties decade. Also, the color of the shows bunny costumes are based on those in the original club, usually light pinks and blues and other innocent colors. The cuffs and bunny insignia cufflinks were a big part of the costume, rule makers for the Playboy clubs made sure that the bunnies on the cufflinks faced each other. Another tip from the bunny costume designer, you can make your legs look flawless by wearing two pairs of hose, the first a pair of compression nude colored hose and on top a pair of sheer black or fishnet hose – this will help you squeeze into a skin tight playboy bunny costume.

Unfortunately, NBC just announced the show is a proverbial ‘bust,’ cancelling the risqué and somewhat low-rated show after just three episodes. But that doesn’t mean it has to be the end of your bunny ‘tale!’
No Bunny Costumes at this Zoo
Recently, the managers at the Edinburgh (Scotland) Zoo told a teenage cancer suffer and her four pals that they had to hop on home because they were dressed up in homemade Easter bunny costumes. I don’t know about you, but we think this is a “hare” insensitive.
Apparently the zoo powers-that-be felt that the costumes, which were actually quite subdued, were inappropriate and might have caused “psychological damage” to the resident animals. They report that some of their beasts, especially the chimps can get agitated with noticeable changes of routine. However, other folks sporting colorful face paint and bright masks resembling other animals were allowed to walk freely around the zoo. Go figure.
Additionally, the zoo features mascot type characters that walk around as entertainers around the different parts of the attraction. It seems that the zoo officials don’t have their policies clearly defined when it comes to what does and doesn’t startle the animals. The outing, which was planned as an activity to cheer up the ailing girl, was redirected to the nearest bowling alley.
So, just to be safe, if you’re heading to an animal attraction this summer, you may want to bring a spare change of clothes if you are trying to go in costume. If you do wear a costume, just be careful what you wear; a big banana costume might just make the gorillas go wild! Safari costumes would be great to wear on an excursion to see the lions and tigers and bears at the zoo, you’ll stay cool in cotton khaki and the cargo pockets offer lots of space to stash souvenirs.
