Zombies, I’m Lovin’ It!
You deserve a scary break today, at McDonalds. We’re lovin’ this costume idea that combines America’s love affair with fast food and zombies. You know how hard it is to go a week without a Big Mac and fries or a catching an episode of the hit show “The Walking Dead” on AMC. Now you can have your proverbial burger and become a flesh-eater too by dressing up as a McDonald’s server zombie. When serving up an order of severed finger fries with a plate of platelets (okay, ketchup), you may just be the ultimate heart-attack giver.
A fast food zombie costume is super easy to make, you just need a few costume accessories, stage makeup, some clothing from home and a little creativity. If at all possible beg or borrow a McDonald’s uniform from a friend; you can also check resale shops for something in a similar vein. Add a half-apron around the waist that has been spattered with faux blood and a server’s cap or hairnet.
For the makeup, let your imagination run wild. You can use theatrical makeup from a costume shop in shades of green or even white and grey. Black eye pencils and charcoal eye shadow help give the look of sunken, skeletal eyes. Wound kits, fake blood, prosthetic teeth and other special effects makeup can help give you the undead look you so long for.
The props are all up to your particular sense of creepy humor. You can recycle fast food containers from your lunch and refill them with crafty props that you make – finger fried, flesh burgers, blood shakes or whatever else you can think of. Even though the allure of the Golden Arches is strong, you may have another favorite restaurant that you’d like to give a Zombie make-over. Just think of how funny it would be to see a zombie Burger King or a zombie Wendy from Wendy’s with her pinafore and red braids.
Put Some Life Into Frankenstein Day
Looking for a way to add a little frightful fun to the second-to-last night in August? Suit up in a Frankenstein costume and help celebrate a monster of a day – Frankenstein Day. Frankenstein Day, designated as the 30th of August, is meant to pay tribute to the birth date of author Mary Wollenstone Shelley who wrote this infamous story. “Frankenstein.” Born August 30, 1818, Shelley wrote the book that practically spawned the entire genre of horror entertainment when she was just 18 years old.
As you may already know, the fictional Dr. Victor Frankenstein was fascinated with science and through his research uncovered the secret to imbuing inanimate objects with the living. After considering the feasibility of bringing a corpse back to life, Dr. Frankenstein assembled a hodgepodge of human body parts and pieced together a larger-than-life creation in the form of a man. However, shortly after making the man, he loses the beauty of his dream and is filled with disgust and horror at his creation – Frankenstein’s monster. Of course, the monster is lonely and sad, not understanding life as a true human and much tragedy follows.
When you think if a Frankenstein costume, the image that comes to mind is the hulking silhouette created in the 1931 Universal Studios movie where Boris Karloff plays the monster. Even though the flick is set in black-and-white, the look for a monster of Frankenstein costume features a tattered and too-small dark suit with broad shoulders and a face cast with a sickly greenish hue. Also signature to the face of Frankenstein’s monster were a thick forehead, sunken eyes, silver bolts sticking out both sides of his neck and sloppy scars from railroad-track style surgical stitching.
While Frankenstein costumes make sense for celebrating Frankenstein Day, the other obvious venue for these theatrical threads is on Halloween. There are quite a few variations of the best Halloween costumes for frightful fun with the horror genre. You can even create your own realistic Frankenstein costume with a hand-me-down suit, green face paint, special effects kits for designing the face scars. Don’t forget the signature walk of this big guy who lumbers through the hallways with heavy steps, locked knees and outstretched arms. He’s alive!
Freddy Krueger — He’s Back!
Ready to reboot the slasher franchise, a remake of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street was released on April 30, 2010 to fans of the horror film genre. The plot, basically the same as the 1984 original, revolves around a group of teenagers that are being stalked by the serial-killer villain, Freddy Krueger. Disfigured heinously be a fire as the result of his evil crimes, this burned bad guy hunts down the kids from the community that spurned him by getting into their dreams. Since horror costumes are always a hit at Halloween, Freddy Krueger costumes are sure to make the proverbial killing this upcoming season.
Halloween costumes based on this villain from Nightmare on Elm Street have been popular for the last 25+ years and are available in styles to fit men, women, teens and children. Freddy Krueger has a horrifyingly memorable look, from the red-and-green striped sweater to his signature fedora, but perhaps the most memorable parts of the Freddy costume are his hideous face and gloves.
Jackie Earle Haley, the actor that plays Freddy Krueger in the remake, underwent quite a bit of time in the makeup chair each day preparing for his role – up to 4 hours a day. Wearing encumbering prosthetics designed to look like a real burn victim, CGI technology was also used post-filming to create some of the more awful special effects such as the open wound on his face. In conjunction with the makeup and computer effects, contact lenses designed to look cloudy and bloody were also worn and gave him partial blindness (for the film only, of course).
Folks who want to dress as Freddy Krueger for Halloween, of course can’t typically retain their own expensive Hollywood makeup artists and computer whizes. But, never fear (or do fear), because most Freddy costumes come with a latex mask that depicts all his gruesome glory. Instead of a costume mask, face paints and special wound kits can be used to recreate the look of burns.
In addition to his burned face, Freddy Krueger also suffered burns along his hands while being set on fire by an angry mob. To carry out his evil intentions, a pair of clawed gloves is always worn over his nubby fingers. Every Freddy Krueger Halloween costume must have the signature gloves to complete the look. Some Freddy costumes come with basic plastic gloves, but fans who want to get the “sharp” look can purchase replica Freddy Krueger gloves made of leather and metal, much more like the real weapons this evil guy wore on his hands.
