Grown Folks Getting Freaky at Comic-Con 2011

Grownups in costumes at every corner, it must be Comic-Con time again! This year, the international convention held in San Diego drew 125,000 people, many of them highly costumed fans hoping to get sneak peeks at their favorite shows, movies, video games and, better yet, a glimpse or autograph from a star of the superhero, action, Manga and other nerd-loved media genres..
This is the place to see and be seen – really seen! Entertainment Weekly reported that everyone from Chris Evans and Charlize Theron to Justin Timberlake and Hugh Jackman all stopped by to hang out in their VIP area. But, mainly the most fun part of this epic four-day event was to sit back on a bench and watch all the costumes parade by like those weird costumes worn by the supergeeks and the even more numerous eye-popping, sexy costumes worn by the ladies we fondly call the “babes of Comic-Con!”
In the weird department, we’ve got plenty of unusual costumes and we’re pretty sure most of these were made at home with lots of duct tape and hot glue or, on the flip side, orchestrated by a professional costume designer. The characters from Star Wars, Star Trek, Battleship Galactica and other sci-fi fiction are always highly represented as are superheroes in every shape, size and gender – we’ve never seen so much Lycra (or so little Lycra as the case may be with some of these sexy costumes)!
So just how super-serious are these fan boys and girls? The proof is in the people-watching, obviously it’s the highlight of the year for many. If you are heading to Comic-Con 2012 next summer or just want to go wild at home with your own celebration, check out the Halloween costumes including men’s and women’s costumes that will make you the best in show!
Cool Halloween Costume Ideas For Parties
It’s one thing to throw together a last minute costume found in the bowels of your closet (how about that old cheerleader uniform) to answer the door for trick-or-treaters, but when invited to an actual, live party, something more exciting is in order. Whether it’s a Halloween celebration or a masquerade ball, we have lots of cool costume ideas for parties that might come a calling for you.
Superheroes: Ride the wave of superhero stardom by dressing up as one of the protagonists of one of this year’s prolific comic-book inspired movies. There are so many superhero movies out in 2011, that you can’t go wrong with a superhero costume such as the Green Hornet, Thor, Green Lantern, Captain America and others. There are plenty of old-school biff-bam-pow lycra suits with capes that can transform you into a vintage rendition of your hero or you can choose one of the many updated, licensed characters form the movie.
Famous or Scandalous People: Showing up at your party in a costume of a political figure, actor or some other personality always gets a good laugh at parties, especially if that person is involved in some sort of scandal at the time. A curvaceous brunette wearing a blue dress and carrying a cigar always got a good laughs during the Clinton administration. Dress up as the Octo-mom by wearing a long brown wig and attaching eight baby dolls to your outfit. For the guys, this year a top pick is definitely to dress up as flipped-out actor Charlie Sheen. The costume is simple really; shorts and a t-shirt along with a fedora and dark sunglasses – oh, and don’t forget the tiger blood.
Princes and Princesses: Of course, dressing as Disney royalty is always a great way to make dreams come true. From Cinderella and Prince Charming to Jasmine and Aladdin, there are many beautiful and beloved costumes that couples can wear in tandem. Or, you can make it “real” by dressing as the Royal Couple of the century, Prince William and Kate Middleton, now officially the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. A fairytale wedding dress and tiara for her and an ornate military-inspired suit for him will make Halloween costumes that really rule!
Top Female Superheroes Chosen By Women
A recent article in Glamour Magazine asked women to name their favorite female superhero, and the rankings speak for themselves. More than half of those polled (52-percent) picked Wonder Woman with Catwoman close behind at 38-percent and Electra in third place with 10-percent of the votes. If you are ever looking to turn into your alter ego, a costume based on one of these daring ladies might be for you.
Wonder Woman is the leading lady in the DC Comics universe, she’s tall, fierce and all that in a red, white and blue superhero suit! Brought up in the all-female Amazon tribe, Wonder Woman stormed into the scene under the cover of government agent Diana Prince. Her enhanced strength, combat skills and the ability to fly helped her get the job done – not to mention her really cool, patriotic Wonder woman suit. Made of a red-white-and-blue leotard (with or without a skirt), white gogo boots, and golden cuffs that repel bullets this female superhero costume is awesome. Don’t forget a brunette wig with a tiara and her powerful “Lasso of Truth.”
Meow, you can be a good kitty or bad kitty in a slinky Catwoman costume. This sexy sidekick of Batman is a paradoxical character in the DC Comic universe -- cunning, clever and hard to predict. Portrayed by a bevy of Hollywood beauties, these actresses have one thing in common – the skin-tight, black Catwoman costume! Choose from a comic book inspired cat suit and mask or even just add ears and tail to a black leotard, fishnet hose and sexy boots --- purrrrfect.
Electra is a superhero from the Marvel Comics universe. Her mysterious beauty and style befits her occupation – a ninja assassin. Skilled in the martial arts, Elektra has super human strength, speed, and agility as well as the power to stealthily move through the shadows. Sexy and sassy, Elektra costumes feature a one-shouldered red dress slit up the side and ninja-like arm and leg bands or a two-piece halter-style pantsuit with belt and arm pieces. Add red boot covers and a Sai dagger for the complete intimidating image.
There are so many other female superheroes -- Super Girl, Laura Croft, She Ra, Storm Rogue, and Jean Gray – just take your pick. Suit up in a female superhero costume and rule the world!
Big Reveal on Captain America Costumes
Oh my stars and garters, a big screen salute to the comic book’s Captain America is set for release sometime during summer 2011! Marvel Studios will be bringing their pumped-up patriot to star in a feature film called “Captain America: The First Avenger” and it will feature actor Chris Evans in the signature spandex suit. The plot in a bean shell; a US soldier gains super-human strength, power and agility after taking an experimental serum and ends up saving the world during WWII.
At Comic-con in San Diego, Chris Evans told MTV that he will wear several versions of a Captain America costume throughout the movie – right now he is still in the fitting stage of the costume process. Evans does reveal that because the action takes place during WWII, the superhero costume will have a “chunkier” look to it to serve the time period better – it’s not a “sleek spandex suit” but basically a 40s-inspired soldier costume. Also, instead of the iconic round shield ringed in red-white-and-blue and marked with a star in the center, there are hints that the shield for the Captain America costume will be quite different. Evans explains that the look is “updated” to fit with the plot of the movie.
Whether you’re rooting for the Captain America costume or are a die-hard fan of the old style Captain America suit, you can be darn sure that this superhero’s look is going to be popular for Halloween costumes this year and next. No word yet on when licensed costumes from the flick will be hitting the market, but you can still get comic-book Avenger costumes to show your support for this famous fictional crime-fighter. Great for a Halloween party, cosplay event or just bustin’ up the bad guys!
Holy Halloween costumes, Batman! A Bangkok, Thailand fireman recently came to the rescue of an eight-year-old boy dressed in his trusty superhero costume. Inflicted with autism, the young boy climbed out onto a three-story window ledge after being unsettled in the first day of his special needs school. Crying and visibly upset, teachers tried to unsuccessfully coax the child to come back in; however, the fire station ultimately had to be called.
